Explanations:Wetlands are areas where water covers the soil or is present either at or near the surface of the soil for varying periods of time during the year. They are crucial for maintaining biodiversity, water quality, and ecological balance. Wetlands also play a significant role in flood control, groundwater recharge, and carbon sequestration.
India, being a vast country with diverse ecosystems, has numerous wetlands that are under threat due to urbanization, pollution, and other human activities. Recognizing the importance of these ecosystems, the Indian government has taken steps to conserve and manage wetlands effectively. One such initiative is the establishment of the first centre for wetland conservation in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu, was chosen for this centre due to its significant wetland areas, such as the Pallikaranai Marsh, which is one of the largest urban wetlands in India. The centre aims to promote the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands through research, education, and community engagement. It also serves as a model for other cities and regions to follow in their efforts to protect and manage wetlands.
The establishment of this centre in Chennai underscores the importance of wetland conservation and the need for dedicated efforts to protect these vital ecosystems. It also highlights the role of urban areas in environmental conservation, as cities like Chennai can play a significant part in preserving natural habitats within their boundaries.
